C’mon, Guinness, Let ‘Em In

In other sausage news, a factory in Montevideo, Uruguay, made a salami 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches long and a shade under two feet in diameter Sept. 4 in a bid to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. It took 43 hours and 40 minutes to produce and weighs just nine pounds shy of a ton.

German Curry

“The Invention of Curried Sausage” by Uwe Timm (New Directions; $19.95) sounds like a book of interest to this section, but it turns out to be a novel about journeying back in time to discover one’s soul or something. The theme is the fad in the Germany of the late ‘40s for adding curry flavoring to fried sausages (mostly full of extenders during that time of poverty), and it’s a pretty good novel. But you don’t have to read the whole thing, because here’s the recipe: Fry curry power in fat, add weisswurst and ketchup and cook until done.

Milk: It Does a Mouth Good

The best cure for an overdose of chile peppers, claim chile writer Dave DeWitt and University of New Mexico horticulture professor Paul Bosland, is milk. Says Bosland: “One school of thought is that a protein in milk called casein interacts with the chemical that causes mouth irritation in spicy foods, but there’s no conclusive research yet.”

Well, it’s a pretty subjective subject (everybody has a chile cure), and physiologists say your nerve cells continue to send an alarm message for six minutes even if the chemical stimulus is removed. Still, the milk will certainly soothe your stomach, which is the next part of your body to get the hot news.

Truckster From the Chuckster

During his visit to Los Angeles last November, the Prince of Wales had lunch with the student-owners of Food From the ‘Hood, the condiment company started by students at Crenshaw High. “Many people thought it was a cute way to get on TV,” reflects student-owner Tarnisha Mayfield. “We didn’t see it that way. We wanted to expand our horizons and build relationships.”

And so they did. It happens that back in England, Prince Charles heads an outfit named Business in the Community, which encourages educational activities. Last Friday, in the prince’s name, British Minister for Trade Anthony Nelson presented Food From the ‘Hood with a 15-passenger van to deliver its salad dressings to markets and to use for other business purposes.
