WESTMINSTER : Man Shot in Bar Brawl Dies; Suspect Arrested

A 36-year-old Westminster man died early Wednesday of gunshot wounds sustained in a Tuesday night brawl at the La Puerta del Sol bar, police said.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at the bar, in the 7700 block of Westminster Boulevard, at 10:30 p.m. and found Irineo Medrano Ramirez three blocks away with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and left arm.

Five minutes later, officers arrested a man they found lying on the ground nearby with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and a small-caliber handgun in his possession, police said. Gerson Edenilson Mata Ortiz, 24, of Huntington Beach was being held on suspicion of murder.

Ramirez was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died after surgery early Wednesday, Officer Robin Kapp said.
