Co-Owner of Cafe in Newport Dies
A 76-year-old woman who owned a popular Newport Beach seafood restaurant died Thursday at UC Irvine Medical Center from injuries she suffered in a car accident Sunday that killed her husband, police said.
June Lorraine Melum and her husband, Howard, 74, who co-owned Hank’s Ocean Front Cafe near the Newport Beach Pier, were driving on MacArthur Boulevard when their car collided with a tractor-trailer hauling a paving machine, police said.
Howard Melum died that night at UCI Medical Center, and June Melum was in coma at the hospital.
Investigators said the driver of the tractor-trailer had been positioning the rig in the center divider. The collision remains under investigation.
