Kendall, Lowery Share First-Round Lead
Sandy Lyle of Scotland, Mats Hallberg of Sweden and Jean-Louis Guepy of France fired 6-under-par 66s and tied for the first-round lead in the British Masters at Northampton, England.
The nine European Ryder Cup players using the tournament as a final tuneup for next week’s competition with U.S. golfers had mixed results.
Sam Torrance of Scotland and Mark James of England were one stroke behind, then came Colin Montgomerie of Scotland and Spain’s Seve Ballesteros at 69.
Jurisprudence
Former lightweight boxing champion Bobby Chacon pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling narcotics at his Pacoima home.
The 43-year-old ex-fighter and 37-year-old Yolanda Maria Medina were arrested Tuesday at Chacon’s house.
Van Nuys Municipal Court Commissioner Gerald Richardson released Chacon on his own recognizance and ordered him to return Sept. 26 for a preliminary hearing.
Tennis
Third- and fourth-seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain and Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy led the advance to the quarterfinals of the Romanian Open with victories at Bucharest, Romania.
Bruguera, at his best on clay, easily ousted Romania’s Andrea Voinea, 6-1, 6-2, in a third-round match on that surface. Gaudenzi struggled to beat Romanian-born Andrew Ilie of Australia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
