Airlines Reduce Fares: In a move that could spark fare battles, Dallas-based American Airlines said it is cutting prices as much as 40% for travel through next Feb. 29. All American and American Eagle domestic or Canadian flights are included. The carrier is also offering fare specials for certain foreign cities. The steepest discounts are for off-peak travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, American said. Northwest Airlines and Trans World Airlines said they intend to match the fare cuts. United Airlines said it will “remain competitive,” and Continental Airlines said it was considering matching the cuts. Officials at Delta Air Lines, the nation’s third-largest carrier, and USAir Group were not available for comment. American, the nation’s largest carrier, said the discounts take effect beginning today.
