SIMI VALLEY : Complex for Seniors on Planners’ Agenda

Share

Simi Valley landowners who once planned to build a mobile home park would like to build a complex for senior citizens instead, possibly with a range of services that include separate apartments, board-and-care and skilled nursing.

But to build that kind of complex on 12 acres at Los Angeles Avenue and Stow Street, property owners Robert and Starlene Barker need a zoning change and a General Plan amendment.

The Simi Valley Planning Commission is scheduled to decide today whether to recommend that the City Council approve the change, as the city’s planning staff has recommended.

“We feel it would make a good potential site,” said planner Sam Freed. “It’s close to shopping, close to major bus lines and on a major arterial.”

The Barkers won approval for the mobile home park last year but balked at having to build permanent, earthquake-safe foundations for the mobile homes and to allow tenants to sign long-term leases.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for tonight’s meeting, which begins at 7 at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

A hearing on a proposed expansion of the Phoenix Ranch School that had been scheduled for tonight was delayed for two weeks.
