A store clerk was struck in the head with a tire iron and left unconscious Wednesday when two robbers stole a cash register and fled, officials said.

Officers were searching for two men who hit Bob Matthew, a 58-year-old clerk at a Shop and Save store on Katella Avenue, and escaped with an undetermined amount of money, Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson said.

The robbery occurred about 10:40 a.m. when the robbers, both described as 6 feet tall and between the ages of 20 and 30, attacked Matthew, grabbed the cash register and ran outside. They emptied it there and fled, Wilkerson said.

They were seen running through a nearby condominium complex called the Branford. Officials searched unsuccessfully with sheriff’s patrol units, a bloodhound and a helicopter.

Police said one robber was wearing a white T-shirt and white shorts. The other wore a pink shirt and dark pants.

Matthew was treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange and released, Wilkerson said.
