SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Police on Thursday caught one of three inmates who escaped from the Pitchess Detention Center, but the other two remained at large.

Julio Treto, 42, was discovered by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators at a friend’s apartment in the 13800 block of Victory Boulevard about 3 p.m., Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Dinsmoor said. Treto, who was serving time at the maximum-security facility at the center in Castaic for burglary, was arrested without incident, Dinsmoor said, and no other arrests were made.

Treto was booked at Men’s Central Jail near Downtown Los Angeles and will also be charged with escaping from prison, Dinsmoor said.

Authorities said Treto, Marcelle Gonzales, 21, and Antonio Carbajal, 30, all of Van Nuys, punched a hole in the jail bakery and climbed out sometime early Wednesday or late Tuesday. They scurried through a hole in the fence.

It was the fifth escape from the sprawling Pitchess compound, and the second from the maximum-security North County Correctional Facility, this year.

Deputies continued searching Thursday for the remaining prisoners, a carjacker and thief.
