Terry Glenn stole the spotlight from running back Eddie George, catching nine passes for a school-record 253 yards and four touchdowns as No. 8-ranked Ohio State wore down outmanned Pittsburgh, 54-14, in a nonconference game on Saturday.

A starter for the first time this season after backing up current NFL players Joey Galloway and Chris Sanders, Glenn was open for most of the afternoon and scored on pass plays of 75, 61, 36 and 12 yards from Bobby Hoying.

“He was just unstoppable today,” Hoying said.

Ohio State Coach John Cooper said he configured the offense to put Glenn in man-to-man coverage as much as possible and exploit the Buckeyes’ speed advantage over the Panthers.

“It was a mismatch to say the least. . . . The few times our cornerbacks were isolated one-on-one because we had a blitz on--the bad news is the blitz didn’t put pressure on,” Pitt Coach Johnny Majors said.

Hoying completed 15 of 24 passes for 296 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters. George gained 121 yards in 24 carries in about a half and has 433 yards for the Buckeyes (3-0) this season.

Pitt (2-2), using five wide receivers at times, trailed only 20-14 at halftime, but appeared to collapse early after the break. John Ryan, who threw two key late interceptions in last week’s 38-27 loss at Texas, had three interceptions Saturday.

Glenn, a junior with 19 catches for 449 yards this season, broke Gary Williams’ 14-year-old record of 220 yards against Florida State and tied Robert Grimes’ 33-year-old touchdown record. Hoying’s five touchdown passes tied a record he had shared with John Borton.

Glenn had a case of the drops early in the game, fumbling two punts, although Ohio State lost neither. He certainly didn’t do much else wrong, though.

His twisting, leaping 18-yard catch on the sideline in the second quarter caught the attention of an NFL scout in the press box and sustained a drive.

“He was great. They have a great quarterback and great receivers. They have speed, and they took advantage of a couple mental mistakes,” Pitt safety John Jenkins said.

Cooper said he is counting on Glenn to replace Galloway, the top pick of the Seattle Seahawks, and Sanders, now with Houston.

Early in the first quarter, Pitt punted after Ryan Miller tackled Demetrius Harris for a nine-yard loss. Two plays later, Hoying found Glenn wide open down the middle. Jim Williams and Daryl Cash reached Glenn, but collided and fell, and Glenn had a 75-yard touchdown.

Ohio State fans comprised about half of the crowd of 54,917, the largest crowd at Pitt Stadium since a 1990 loss to Notre Dame. Pittsburgh is a little more than three hours from Columbus.
