Share

Officials from the city of San Fernando’s recreation department are encouraging youths who are interested in participating in a variety of free sports and activities held after school at city parks to register for the programs soon.

Flag football leagues for children 8 to 14 will be run at all four city parks from October to December, said Gwen Indermill, activities director for the city.

Also beginning in October, volleyball leagues will be run for youngsters 12 to 15 at Las Palmas and Recreation Parks, Indermill said.

Beginning this week, themed activities will be held each day of the week at two city parks. Recreation Park is featuring “Hawaiian Days,” for kids of all ages. Youngsters will learn how to make flower leis and participate in water relays, Hula-Hoop contests and a costume parade.

Pioneer Park will feature nature-based activities. Kids will go on a nature walk and scavenging hunt, play nature-oriented games and learn how to make crafts with wood.

Parents may register at Recreation Park, Indermill said, adding that youths must present proof of age to participate. Youngsters also will be asked to help out in a fund-raising activity, such as a carwash, to help finance the programs.
