A suspected burglar tried to escape from Oxnard police Monday afternoon by jumping into the ocean and swimming away, but finally swam back to shore and was arrested, authorities said.

Rodney Koenig was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of residential burglary.

Police said Koenig ran toward Hollywood Beach after a resident saw him taking items from a garage on Sunset Lane.

Koenig was standing next to the water when police arrived and he jumped into the ocean as they approached, police said. The officers yelled out to Koenig several times to return to shore, and he eventually complied.
