Westside : Domestic Violence Council Gets Help From Celebrities

Share

A coalition of celebrities on Tuesday lent their support--and clout--to the local fight against domestic violence.

Actresses Victoria Principal, Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan were among the stars who appeared at the UCLA Medical Center to announce formation of a fund-raising group for Los Angeles County’s Domestic Violence Council.

The new group, known as the Community Advisory Board, joined with the council about two months ago and has already raised $60,000 in one fund-raiser, a private dinner party. The money will pay for nurses to make the rounds at Los Angeles County’s 19 battered women’s shelters, said Carol Arnett, the council’s executive director.

The advisory board is providing the financial backing that the Domestic Violence Council has needed since it was appointed by the county Board of Supervisors in 1979 to help battered women and to work on domestic violence issues, Arnett said.
