SANTA PAULA : School Delays Vote on Gift From AT

Santa Paula High School has been offered $100,000 worth of AT&T; cellular phones and computer modems to be used as education tools--one of 10 schools being considered in California and Nevada.

But the school board decided Wednesday to postpone a formal vote on whether to accept the AT&T; communications equipment, which would be installed at no charge.

Maintenance of the system also would be free for the first year, but the district would have to spend thousands of dollars annually to maintain the system after that, said Nanette Zima, the district’s assistant superintendent.

“It’s a great opportunity. I have no doubts about it,” Trustee Robert Salas said. “Before we make a decision, we need to make sure we can afford this system for the next five years.”

The board directed its staff to negotiate details of the proposed communications system with AT&T; before it would make a final decision on whether to accept the gift.
