SIMI VALLEY : $6,000 Claim Filed After SWAT Battle

Share

A Simi Valley couple claim the city owes them nearly $6,000 to repair damage caused when a SWAT team took over their house in a shooting last month that killed a Simi Valley police officer.

John and Sandra McGuire this week filed a civil claim with the city listing damages to their house and furnishings. The couple claim the damage occurred when police broke into their house on Aug. 4 in a SWAT operation to try to save fatally wounded Officer Michael Clark.

Clark was gunned down across the street from the McGuires’ home during a shootout with distraught social studies teacher Daniel A. Tuffree, who was indicted Wednesday in the officer’s murder.

Damage to the McGuires’ home during the battle includes broken and scratched windows, chipped furniture, broken fences and a $2,890 carpet rendered useless by glass shards that cleaners said they could not remove, according to a claim filed Monday with the city. The couple claim they also lost two days’ wages worth $362.

Lt. Tony Harper, a Police Department spokesman, declined to comment Thursday on the McGuires’ civil claim. So did Marjorie Baxter, senior assistant city attorney.
