After a last-minute scramble to finish the amphitheater and install carpet and shelves in the new library, Ethel Dwyer Middle School celebrated its 60th anniversary by dedicating those new facilities and the $4-million Mike Case Science Wing.
“It’s just like moving into a new home,” Principal Ian Collins said of the long-awaited expansion to keep up with growing enrollment. “After all the planning and meetings,” he said, “to see it finally coming together is great.”
Construction began in October on the new wing, named in memory of the school’s longtime science teacher, who died this year of cancer. The wing has 10 classrooms, science and computer labs, a cafeteria and a library.
“It allows us to improve technological opportunities,” said Shirley Carey, a member of the Huntington Beach City School District board.
Students moved into the new classrooms at the start of school and have also been using the new cafeteria but sitting at rented tables, Collins said, because the new ones weren’t delivered until last weekend.
