Lawyers Try to Salvage Implant Settlement: Breast implant makers and lawyers of women who claim the implants made them sick tried to salvage part of the nation’s largest single product-liability settlement. The move comes after the attorneys said they had given up on saving the full $4.25-billion global agreement, which an analysis found was far too small to pay women what they were promised. “The original deal is just not what we’re talking about anymore,” said Ralph Knowles, one of the women’s lawyers. Instead, talks focused on a plan proposed by four manufacturers--Bristol-Myers Squibb, Baxter International, 3M and Union Carbide--that would resolve lawsuits through an offer that could be made directly to women as early as next week.
