Some Nurses Specialize in Mental Health
In “Licensed to Heal” (Aug. 29) you provide a much-needed service. However, psychiatric mental-health nurses were not listed as major mental-health professionals. As president of the California Assn. of PMHNs in Advanced Practice, I wish to complete your snapshot of professions. We are registered nurses who specialize in individual, couple, family and group therapy for the treatment of emotional and physical problems. We are titled PMHN specialists or psychiatric nurse practitioners.
PMHNs legally recognized as independent providers of mental-health services since 1975. As such, we are reimbursed by insurance and managed-care companies.
We are licensed in all 50 states. The number of sessions required for treatment and probable fees are similar to those of other master’s-level therapists.
