Upjohn Animal Health Division Enters Joint Venture: The Kalamazoo, Mich.-based company and partner Suzhou Pharmaceutical Factory No. 4 of China will build a $15-million plant in Suzhou, near Shanghai, with production to begin in 1997. Suzhou Pharmaceutical produces bulk pharmaceuticals and has more than 1,000 employees. The 27-employee plant will make Upjohn feed, disease prevention and treatment products. Upjohn will own 75% of the partnership. The venture is Upjohn Co.’s second major investment in China. A $30-million pharmaceutical joint venture was established in 1993, also with Suzhou Pharmaceutical. China is the third-largest animal health products market in the world, Upjohn said.
