Billy Cat Tran began his college career this year with the help of Cal State Fullerton’s first mathematics scholarship offered to high school graduates of the Santa Ana Unified School District.

The $300-per-year scholarship was created by math professor David L. Pagni, who started an endowment by donating the $4,000 cash award he received when named the university’s 1993-94 Cal State Outstanding Professor.

University officials said the scholarship was established to help students pay for their schooling as they pursue careers in teaching math, and ultimately become educators in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

“It’s a chance to feed into the district for a long-term impact,” Pagni said.

Tran, a Santa Ana resident, is majoring in math and computer science.
