LAGUNA NIGUEL : Contract Awarded for Median Improvement

Share

A $1.3-million contract to beautify street medians at several locations in the city has been awarded by the City Council.

Tracy & Ryder Landscape of Rancho Santa Margarita underbid its nearest competitor by less than $10,000 in the contract awarded Monday.

The median improvements have been a project since the city incorporated in 1989.

When Laguna Niguel lost a dispute with Dana Point over a stretch of Monarch Beach coastline in 1988, city officials turned toward median beautification to bolster civic pride.

“This has been one of the priorities of the city from the outset,” said Councilwoman Patricia C. Bates. “People say they want the medians, want community identity. It’s a community statement.”

City Manager Tim Casey said the landscaping company will start work this month and should be completed in five months.

In some areas, the contractor will build raised planters using terra-cotta-hued bricks. The planters will be filled with jacaranda trees and shrubbery.

Currently, many medians “are just strips of dirt and weeds,” said Casey.
