A toddler was killed and 10 children were injured, two critically, when an out-of-control pickup truck crashed into a preschool playground Thursday.

The crash sent distraught parents rushing to the center, some nearly hysterical with grief and fear.

“Oh, my God, what happened to him?” one woman wailed as she ran, sobbing, down the street.

Another woman, who said her 4-year-old nephew was among the injured, pressed her lips together as she paced back and forth across the street from the Lossieland PreSchool.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “When I got here, it’s like five kids stuck up under the truck. They was moving them out, doing the best they can.”

The injured children range in age from 1 to 4.

Two-year-old Robert Turner IV died at Highland Hospital, the Alameda County coroner’s office said. A 4-year-old boy was in extremely critical condition at Children’s Hospital along with another 4-year-old boy who was in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The other children were either in good condition at area hospitals or had been treated and released.

Police questioned the 18-year-old woman driving the truck. No charges have been filed.

The late-model truck plowed through a fence and into a play area, coming to a stop against a plastic climbing gym.

The day care center operates in a residential area of East Oakland.
