A man arrested by Evanston police for a traffic violation Saturday was being questioned by FBI agents to see if he had any connection to the Unabomber case, an agency spokesman said.

FBI spokesman George Grotz in San Francisco confirmed that the agency was investigating whether the man taken into custody in the Chicago suburb was linked to the elusive mail bomber.

“We have agents checking it out,” said Grotz, who would not release the man’s name. “It’s going to be a while before things are sorted out.”

The 37-year-old man was arrested Saturday morning when police noticed his van had expired California license plates, WMAQ radio reported. A gun and electronic equipment were found in the van, the station reported.

The Unabomber is responsible for three deaths and 23 injuries in 16 package bomb attacks since 1978, starting in the Chicago area.
