State Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren and former Gov. George Deukmejian have endorsed Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole for President, Dole’s campaign said Monday.

Deukmejian, a conservative Republican from Long Beach, was governor from 1983 to 1991.

Lungren, a protege of Deukmejian, was elected to his second four-year term as attorney general last year. He said he intends to run for governor in 1998 to succeed fellow Republican Pete Wilson.

Lungren’s endorsement came as little surprise. Earlier this year, Dole publicly mentioned Lungren as a vice presidential possibility, and Lungren’s brother, Brian, is a key Dole strategist in California.
