A man arrested for shooting and wounding a veteran California Highway Patrol officer three weeks ago in San Diego County has been identified by the FBI as the prime suspect in a pair of bank robberies in Ventura County.

David Edward Huzar, 39, of Glendale, Ariz., was identified as a suspect in a string of 14 robberies in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, said Kiara Audrich, a spokeswoman for the FBI.

Audrich said investigators used surveillance photographs to make the identification.

Huzar is suspected of robbing the First Interstate Bank on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura on May 6 and the American Savings Bank on North Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks on April 13.

The San Diego shootout occurred Sept. 26 after an officer approached Huzar, who was sitting in his car on the side of the road. Without warning, Huzar began firing at the officer, police said. The officer returned fire and critically wounded Huzar, who was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he remains in custody.
