“A Little Princess,” the tale of a young girl’s struggle after she is suddenly orphaned, won top honors Thursday at the Thousand Oaks Children’s Film Festival, beating out movies about a talking pig and a cartoon Indian princess.

The two-day festival--which featured films for, about and by children--brought 500 grade-school students to the Civic Arts Plaza to see movies they might not find at a local theater.

“It has been a huge success,” said chairwoman Nancy Frawley. “The kids loved it.”

But it was ultimately the adult critics--from Siskel and Ebert to the editors of Parenting magazine--who picked the year’s best children’s film. The nominees were “A Little Princess,” “Babe,” “Indian in the Cupboard,” “Little Women” and “Pocahontas.”

The critics also picked the best educational film: “The Lilith Summer,” produced by Bernard Willets.

Organizers hope to make the festival an annual event and expand its screenings to more students next year.
