ANAHEIM : City Gets Grant for Commuter Van Service
Plans for a shuttle service from Anaheim Canyon Business Center to Metrolink trains serving Riverside moved a step forward this week.
City Council members accepted a $104,500 grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority to start the shuttle service. The passenger vans will operate out of the Metrolink rail station scheduled to open next spring at Tustin and La Palma avenues in northeast Anaheim.
Initial plans call for two trains to arrive at the station in the morning from Riverside, and two trains to return in the evening.
Diana Kotler, the city’s transportation programs planner, said there is a “tremendous market” for rail service in Anaheim Canyon. Of the 50,000 employees who work in the canyon area, about one-third live in Riverside County, she said.
The council also voted to hire Fountain Valley-based Schiermeyer Consulting Services to help the city developing the shuttle program.
“I think [the shuttle service] will be well received,” said Elaine Kuhnke, an associate planner with the consulting firm. “Because the area is fairly dense, you can serve a lot of employers in a small area.”
Kuhnke said rail commuters will be able to ride the vans free of charge. Shuttle fees will be included in Metrolink fares.
