South Bay : 20,000 Rubber Ducks Race Against Cancer

Share

Nearly 20,000 rubber ducks will hit the waves today as the American Cancer Society of Los Angeles embarks on the fifth annual Rubber Duck Regatta at the Redondo Beach Pier.

The noon race raises money for cancer research, patient services and education in Los Angeles County. Sponsors who make a $5 contribution receive a numbered adoption certificate corresponding to the number on the duck.

A barge will drop the ducks into the water at the end of the pier and the first three ducks to reach the shore will win a trip to Hawaii for their owners; the first 120 ducks will receive Unocal gasoline certificates.

“A lot of people turn up at the event to memorialize someone,” said coordinator Lynn Knudsen. “They name their ducks after someone who raced against cancer.”
