Building of a Duke’s Surf City restaurant at the foot of the pier moved a step closer this week after the Planning Commission approved construction of a 18,000-square-foot, two-story building.

The restaurant will be built on the site of the closed Maxwell’s By the Sea. The existing restaurant building will be demolished to make way for Duke’s.

Community Services Director Ron Hagan said the $5-million project will be paid for by TS Restaurants, which will build and operate the surfing-themed eatery. The company operates Duke’s restaurants--named after surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku--in Hawaii.

The proposed restaurant is smaller than one previously approved by the City Council and California Coastal Commission for the site.

Originally proposed was a 31,000-square-foot, three-story restaurant with a banquet facility.

But the proposal for the restaurant building was modified after the city decided to pursue a new tenant for the site.

Hagan said the exterior will feature a mix of Hawaiian, Polynesian and California styles and the interior will have an open-air design to enhance coastal views.

The revised restaurant building will be considered by the City Council next month and if approved, it is planned to open by the summer of 1997.
