Authorities Arrest 30 in Anaheim Sweep : Crime: One third of suspects are picked up for alleged parole violations in seven-hour interagency operation on west side.

Police arrested 30 people suspected of crimes including attempted murder, robbery and narcotics possession during a seven-hour sweep of the city’s west side, authorities said Friday.

From 5 p.m. to midnight Thursday, about 50 police officers joined agents from three other state and county departments in serving search warrants and “basically patrolling” the area of Lincoln Avenue and Beach Boulevard, Police Sgt. Doug Wuest said. They fanned out in teams of three or four and targeted hotels and apartments that had been the focus of complaints, police said.

“We flooded the area with a lot of officers in an effort to suppress the criminal problem,” Wuest said. “This kind of an operation pulls a lot of manpower, but as you can see, it’s also very effective.”

Thirty arrests were made, a third of which were for parole violations, Wuest said. Other charges included auto theft, prostitution and possession of a weapon.

The raids are conducted periodically in Anaheim, especially in the west end of the city where police receive a large number of calls, authorities said.

“It’ll be quiet out there for a while,” Wuest said. “We wish we could do this every day, but we just don’t have the manpower.”

Other departments that assisted police officers include the Orange County Probation Department, the state Department of Corrections and the state Justice Department’s violence suppression unit.
