COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Abdul-Jabbar Tires Everyone Out

It will be a part of highlight films for years to come. Those who saw it Saturday at the Rose Bowl can’t stop talking about it.

But the incredible 14-yard run into the end zone by UCLA Bruin tailback Karim Abdul-Jabbar left his teammates speechless.

After catching a screen pass from quarterback Ryan Fien, Abdul-Jabbar covered approximately 90 yards in three trips across the field before finally scoring.

“We just had our jaws dropped,” said quarterback Cade McNown, who watched from the sidelines. “We thought, ‘He’s going to be tackled. No, he’s not. Yes, he is.’ It seemed like it went on for an hour. By the time it was over, we were exhausted. He was exhausted. It was the greatest run I’ve ever seen.”

UCLA Coach Terry Donahue, who has seen a few more runs than McNown in his 20 years of head coaching, wasn’t about to argue.

Watching the film, Donahue noticed that tight end Brian Richards blocked two Wildcats.

“It looked like he [Richards] knocked a guy partially out,” Donahue said. “The guy couldn’t get up right away. He tried to and he kind of staggered. When Karim came back around for the second or third time, the guy finally got back up, but he couldn’t make the play.”

Middle linebacker Donnie Edwards, who missed nearly two full games because of a compression fracture of the vertebrae and last week’s game because of an NCAA suspension, is listed as probable for Saturday’s game against Stanford. . . . Safety Glenn Thompkins suffered a broken wrist in the Arizona game. His status for Saturday is unknown. . . . Richards is doubtful because of shoulder and knee injuries.
