CLUB REVIEW : Sucker’s Mixed Bag of Music an Afternoon Delight

Thankfully, Miss V. Davis needs her sleep.

Prompted by too many late nights out, the L.A. club promoter and drag artiste decided to start Sucker, a Sunday afternoon pop/punk deejay and live-music fest at the Garage, a new Silver Lake hot spot.

“This way I can have some fun and still get to bed early,” Davis says. So can the numerous patrons, who have been migrating to the popular scene since its inception last month.

From 3 to 8 p.m., Sucker treats its mix of gay and straight patrons to such spin doctors as deejays and co-promoters Jeffrey Hilburt and Paul Rossi, who is also one of the Garage’s owners.

A recent Sunday set by Hilburt, who also promotes Friday night’s “Hai Karate” club at the Garage, was particularly inspired. The deejay managed to create an invigorating, head-bopping scene by tying together an oddball array of hits by the likes of Steve Miller, PJ Harvey, Joan Jett, Cypress Hill, the Presidents of the United States and the Kinks. By the time he worked in some Human League and Cheap Trick, it was clear that the real Suckers were those who stayed home.

A live band performs around 5:30 p.m., and such alternative acts as Four Star Mary, Drill Team and Rizzo have already graced the room’s small stage area. With the Garage offering spacious blue booths and a red-varnished, glitter-padded bar, the place already has an air of comfort.

Club Buzz: The 6-month-old Impala Cafe, located downtown at the former site of the Atomic and Troy cafes, offers another downtown live music option on weekend nights by regularly booking “underground pop.” . . . Club 70’s, a Sunday night ‘70s music disco/dance scene at the Probe in Hollywood, is having its annual Halloween costume party on Oct. 29 and will offer $500 to winners in three categories: best ‘70s original, most frightening and best costume.
