Vedder Paces Saddleback to Upset of Top-Ranked El Camino, 21-16
Justin Vedder passed for two touchdowns to give Saddleback an early lead as the Gauchos upset El Camino, the top-ranked team in California, 21-16, Saturday night in front of 750 fans at Saddleback College. El Camino (5-1), which has the top offense in the Mission Conference, was limited to 248 total yards.
Saddleback (3-3) grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Mark Reynosa scored the first on an eight-yard run. Vedder then found Peter Campbell with a 14-yard touchdown pass.
El Camino cut the lead to 14-3, but Vedder hit Greg Payne with a 48-yard touchdown pass to give the Gauchos a 21-3 halftime lead.
El Camino scored twice in the second half, but could not catch the Gauchos.
