Ex-Deputy Wins $850,000 Settlement From County

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to pay a former Sheriff’s Department deputy $850,000 more than five years after he said deputies surrounded his home, knocked him over with a patrol car and allowed a police dog to bite him.

Michael F. Brooks, 46, filed a federal lawsuit after the bizarre 1990 incident, which started outside the former deputy’s Walnut home.

Although the cause of the incident remains unclear, the Sheriff’s Department had previously suspended Brooks--and apparently placed him under surveillance--after he made threats against a supervising lieutenant.

Attorneys for the county had admitted to a “series of mistakes.” Neither side could be reached for comment Tuesday.
