Southeast : WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Share

For some of its students, the name Cal State Long Beach simply will not do. They need something punchier, something more individual. Take the name Long Beach State University, for instance.

Reopening an issue that has been tossed around for years by students and administrators, the student Senate today will consider changing the name of the campus for the first time in more than 20 years.

Supporters say a change to LBSU would underline the university’s individual strengths. They want to distinguish the campus from the 21 other campuses in the California State University system. Doubters, however, fear it would cost thousands of dollars to change stationery and sweat shirts.

Any official change would have to be approved by the state Legislature. University officials say that would probably require the support of the campus administration, which has not taken a position on the proposed name change.
