Two community forums will be held this week on the proposal to break up the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The first will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Riverside Drive School, 13061 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks. Sponsored by the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley, the panel discussion will feature Los Angeles school board members Jeff Horton, Julie Korenstein and David Tokofsky.

According to forum coordinator Carol Blad, the board members will discuss various break-up proposals that have been presented and answer questions from the audience.

Another forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Valley Beth Shalom, 15739 Ventura Blvd., Encino. Sponsored by the Valley Jewish Business Leaders Assn., the debate will feature Mike Roos, president of Los Angeles Educational Alliance for Restructuring Now (LEARN), and Assemblywoman Paula L. Boland (R-Granada Hills).

Roos will argue against dismantling the district and Boland will argue in favor. Boland successfully pushed a law through the Legislature that makes it easier for dissatisfied parents to formally request the state Board of Education to put the issue on the ballot. The law takes effect Jan. 1.
