Great Beginnings for Black Babies, a Crenshaw-area nonprofit group, has kicked off a campaign to educate African American mothers about the importance of immunizing infants.

With a $75,000 grant from Blue Cross, Great Beginnings will start an education and media campaign to promote immunizing children in their first three years, said Jeanne Taylor, spokeswoman for the group.

Great Beginnings will refer mothers to clinics where their babies can receive free immunizations, Taylor said.

The organization, which started out as a prenatal care counseling service, has expanded in recent years. “As we have grown and looked at the needs of women of child-bearing age, we saw we also needed to be concerned about the children after they are born,” Taylor said.
