South Bay : A CLOSER SHERIFF

Share

At least four miles separate Lawndale residents from their sheriff’s station, but city officials are looking to reduce that distance with a proposal to open a substation on Prairie Avenue.

Together with officials from the Lennox sheriff’s station, Lawndale city leaders are sizing up a vacant, 1,500-square-foot community center at Prairie and 154th Street. Deputies must now travel through Hawthorne, which has its own Police Department, to patrol the two-square-mile city.

“This would give residents an opportunity to have something a few blocks away from their homes,” Lennox station Capt. Jack Scully said.

The facility would be open to the public 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday to provide residents a place to meet with detectives and deputies. Some investigators would also be assigned full time to the facility, and deputies would be expected to use the center for everything but booking suspects.

The cost of renovating the building has been estimated at $400,000, with the city and county roughly splitting the costs.
