LAGUNA NIGUEL : Planning Commission OKs Swimming Lessons in Home Pools
Private swimming instruction should be allowed in back-yard pools, the city Planning Commission recommended this week.
Under the proposed city code amendment, swimming could be taught in home pools by people who don’t own or live at the residence where the instruction is taking place.
The provision was added to allow swimming teachers to give private lessons.
The code change now goes to the City Council, which originally called for legalizing pool instruction in Laguna Niguel.
The council was “generally interested in pool safety,” said City Planning Manager Bill Cunningham. “Because Laguna Niguel has so many swimming pools, the council felt there was a need for young people to get swim instruction.”
The commission also recommended a few restrictions. Swimming lessons or schools should be limited to residential property owners or nonprofit organizations. Hours for instruction should be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. And no more than four students should be taught at any single lesson.
Also, no signs advertising swimming instructions should be visible from the exterior of a residence.
