LAGUNA BEACH : Alley Renovation Begins With Paving

As part of a larger project to transform a downtown alley into a more inviting passageway, paving will begin next week in the Forest Avenue alley.

The renovation is a response to requests from community members who began suggesting years ago that the heavily traveled 600-foot stretch of pavement needed a face lift.

The city at first intended to tackle only the structural problems, including poor drainage. But some residents insisted that the rundown passageway be transformed into “a new environment.”

“It’s a way of beautifying that alley and still maintaining its function,” said Meg Monahan, who took charge of the project from its inception. “I’m just so happy it’s finally being done.”

Initial plans to decorate the alley were prepared by design teams of community volunteers. The passageway, which runs from Beach Street to Coast Highway between Ocean and Forest avenues, will still be open to both vehicles and pedestrians.

The Chamber of Commerce, which has taken over fund raising to pay for the decorative aspects of the renovation, is planning a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 4.

Residents who want to contribute can purchase a personalized brick to be implanted in the roadway for $125. The money raised will be used to purchase amenities for the alley.
