The City Council has unanimously endorsed a movement by the League of California Cities to divert more of the state sales tax to local governments.

League officials hope to persuade the state Legislature to give cities 2% of the state sales tax, instead of the current 1%.

In its resolution, the City Council emphasized that the state “has acted to reduce the amount of revenue received by cities in recent years forcing many cities throughout California to augment their revenues by imposing local assessments, fees or taxes or to make cuts in essential [city] services.”

The council charged that public safety in the cities is suffering because of inadequate funding from the state.

The City Council also noted the Los Angeles division of the League of California Cities, which is the largest chapter in the state, has also gone on record supporting the statewide move to get an increased share of the sales tax.
