PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : NFC : Jones Raises Ante for Super Bowl Season

Cowboy owner Jerry Jones put the heat on his team, saying there can be no excuse short of catastrophic injury for not winning the Super Bowl.

“There can’t be one acceptable excuse except for losing one of the triplets [Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith or Troy Aikman],” Jones said. “I still haven’t been able to accept the fact we didn’t win last year even with the injuries that we had.”

Jones also said Coach Barry Switzer is safe even if the Cowboys fail to win the Super Bowl this year.

Jones, however, refused to comment on reports that defensive lineman Leon Lett and cornerback Clayton Holmes have run afoul of the league’s drug abuse policy.

49er defensive lineman Dana Stubblefield was arrested on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer in an altercation involving his former girlfriend, authorities said in Milpitas, Calif.

Stubblefield, 24, arrested early Saturday, is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Municipal Court on Dec. 12. Former girlfriend Kimberley Carsten, 26, was arrested for investigation of making a false report to police. The 49ers said they would not punish Stubblefield.

One day after releasing struggling Chip Lohmiller, the New Orleans Saints offered a contract to Doug Brien, a former San Francisco kicker who has also had a rough start. Brien has reportedly agreed to but not signed a two-year, no-option $200,000 contract. . . . Meanwhile, Lohmiller and Dean Biasucci got tryouts for the vacancy with the St. Louis Rams.
