THE BOYS ARE BACK

Valley residents have a chance to hear the Danish Boys Choir, det danske drengekor , in their only Southern California concert hall appearance Friday night in Glendale.

Established in 1943 and based in Copenhagen, the 39-voice choir has toured throughout Europe and around the world with stops in Japan, Israel, Greenland, Russia, the United States and Canada. When it’s not touring, the choir regularly performs at the Royal Theatre in Denmark.

The choir’s repertoire features a wide range of material, including classical works by Mozart, Faure and Franck along with popular American and Scandinavian songs. The choir is made up of boys 10 to 15 years old who are selected through a rigorous audition process. Steen Lindholm is the conductor and music director of the ensemble.

SATURDAY STARS LIGHT, STARS BRIGHT

For many people living in Los Angeles, seeing movie stars and other celebrities becomes routine. So-and-so in Gelson’s, what’s-his-name at Starbucks, you-know-who at Bullock’s. . . . Big deal, they’re only people!

But for out-of-towners and the rest of us not as yet that jaded, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is offering an opportunity to stargaze and fight AIDS at the same time.

On Saturday in North Hollywood, the academy will sponsor a Celebrity Family Carnival, featuring photo opportunities with celebrity guests, psychic readings, mimes, clowns, face-painting, balloons, food and other activities.

Among the celebrities scheduled to appear are television talk show host Leeza Gibbons, Tyne Daly (Lacey of “Cagney & Lacey”), “Brady Bunch” mom Florence Henderson, comic David Spade of Saturday Night Live, actresses Vicki Lawrence and Liz Torres and many others.

* The Celebrity Family Carnival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Academy of Television Arts and Science’s Hall of Fame, 5220 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood. Admission is $5 general, $3 children younger than 12. All proceeds from the event will go to the fight against AIDS. Call (818) 754-2877.

STRINGS ATTACHED

Jim Gamble Puppet Productions will present “The Greatest Little Show on Earth” on Sunday at the Sherman Oaks Co-op Nursery School Fair. The show is a mini-circus with puppets for clowns, animals and the ringmaster.

Gamble is a respected puppet designer and performer who is known for entertaining productions and handcrafted marionettes. Gamble began making puppets during his childhood in Texas. Since he took early retirement from his job as a pilot for Continental Airlines in 1983, Gamble’s puppet company has grown to become one of the largest and busiest in the United States.

It now produces more than 2,500 live performances per year. The company has appeared at EXPO ’93 in Korea and at puppet festivals in Asia, South America and Europe. In addition, its award-winning video series, “Musical Classics for Children,” is distributed worldwide.

Besides Gamble’s puppets, the school fair will have other entertainment, games, raffles, food and prizes.
