St. Margaret’s Chris Cain scored three touchdowns and Jon Masters had two as the Tartans defeated winless California School for the Deaf Riverside, 54-0, in a Freedom League game Thursday at San Clemente High.

With the victory, St. Margaret’s (2-6, 2-1) clinched the league’s third playoff spot.

The Tartans scored on all four of their possessions in the first quarter, with Cain responsible for three touchdowns.

Cain, who carried the ball 15 times for 140 yards, scored on the first play of the game, running 64 yards down the sideline for a 7-0 lead with only 52 seconds off the clock.

St. Margaret’s Mike Heydenrych intercepted a pass on CSDR’s first play. Cain scored on the next play from 13 yards out with 10:16 left in the first quarter.

After a three-yard touchdown run by Masters, Cain scored his final touchdown, running in from five yards with 1:53 left in the first quarter.

Quarterback Heydenrych connected with Masters early in the second quarter for a 27-yard touchdown pass and a 34-0 Tartan lead.

Heydenrych closed out the half leading a 14-play, 71-yard drive and scoring on a 17-yard run with five seconds left.

St. Margaret’s got its final two touchdowns when Aaron Koening scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter, and reserve Justin Jameson, who carried the ball eight times for 114 yards, scored on a 47-yard run. CSDR fell to 0-7, 0-4.
