COSTA MESA : Campaign Likely to Be Run by Anaheim Firm

At the request of Mayor Pro Tem Peter F. Buffa, the City Council will review the awarding of a contract to Lefebvre Advertising to create a campaign promoting Costa Mesa as a tourist destination, a council member said Friday.

The Costa Mesa Tourism and Promotion Board awarded a contract to Anaheim-based Lefebvre in September. After the deal was made, however, some council members questioned why the work was not given to a firm in Costa Mesa.

City Manager Allan L. Roeder said he investigated and found that Lefebvre was chosen because there was scant interest from advertising agencies in Costa Mesa. “One local firm said they were simply too small an account,” he said of the tourism board.

Roeder said Buffa asked him to bring the issue before the council again.

“I don’t think there is anything that can be done,” Roeder said. “They really went out of their way to contact as many Costa Mesa firms as possible, but they could not find anyone.”

Buffa was not available for comment Friday.
