ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : With Victory, Laguna Hills Gets Share of Title

Laguna Hills didn’t accomplish the impossible Friday night, but as Coach Steve Bresnahan sees it, the Hawks came pretty close.

Laguna Hills rolled past Laguna Beach, 42-12, at Laguna Beach High to clinch at least a share of the Pacific Coast League title for the second consecutive year, something Bresnahan admitted he thought was unlikely.

“I never thought it was impossible, but highly improbable,” Bresnahan said. “I thought we would be too young to be consistent enough to win the league, but we just got better every week, especially the last four or five.”

Michael Jones ran for a season-high 250 yards and five touchdowns in 29 carries before exiting after three quarters.

With the Hawks (8-1, 4-0) leading, 14-3, starting the third quarter, Jones carried once for six yards then broke loose up the middle on the ensuing play for a 74-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach.

Jones improved his season total for yards to 1,668, and trails Savanna’s Eric Shine by only 18 for the county lead.

“[Winning the title] feels good right now, but I haven’t really gotten hit by it yet,” Jones said. “After CIF [playoffs] it will probably sink in, but I won’t be satisfied until then.”

Quarterback James Kimball completed a school-record 26 passes in 41 attempts for 220 yards and one touchdown for Laguna Beach (2-7, 0-4).
