Four-Star Films : ‘Raging Bull’

Robert De Niro won an Oscar as Jake La Motta in Martin Scorsese’s superb 1980 “Raging Bull,” one of the best American films in recent decades. De Niro’s well-publicized weight gain for the role helps, but his portrayal of the champion boxer is created from deep within. Filmed in a rich black and white by Michael Chapman, “Raging Bull” is an impeccable period piece and another of Scorsese’s unforgettable expressions of the Italian-American experience. With Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci (TBS Saturday at 10:05 p.m.).
