School Breakaway Advocates Hold Community Forum Today

Advocates for breaking away from the Los Angeles Unified School District will hold a community forum in South-Central Los Angeles today.
Considered an early test of the viability of an inner-city school district drive, the meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Masjid Omar Ibn Al Khattab. The mosque is at 1025 W. Exposition Blvd. near the University of Southern California.
The event is co-sponsored by Los Angeles Unified Board of Education member Barbara Boudreaux, who has previously said the 135,000-student area south and southwest of Downtown should prepare its own plan in case a breakup occurs.
Those favoring a more aggressive approach hope to recruit a larger committee at the meeting to help draft a proposal for submission to the county next year.
