ROCK VISIONARY

Share

I’ve been attending rock concerts since I was 16. I’m now in my early 40s and still enjoy seeing the bands play live. I was reminded of my “advancing years” by having to buy my first pair of bifocals last spring.

In last week’s Pop Eye, it was mentioned that the Pretenders will no longer allow binoculars to be brought to their shows. I was told the same thing at Irvine Meadows this past fall when attending the Live/PJ Harvey show (my seats were way up in the loge). I’m also noticing more tickets for shows going on sale on Monday mornings at 10, when most of us are at work.

I guess my question is this: Are rock artists and their promoters trying to dissuade their older, working fans from attending their shows? Since I’m unable to take Mondays off from work, and can’t afford the scalper markups for seats close to the stage, it looks like I might be saving all those hard-earned dollars I’ve been spending on concert tickets and just staying home with a good book. And that makes me kind of sad.
