Bolsa Chica Development Ruinous

Share

* The Coastal Commission will be hearing the Bolsa Chica development plan Thursday. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust, with its over 2,600 members, urges the commission to reject the proposed project.

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust was formed in 1992 with the simple and self-evident vision [that] the development of over 3,300 housing units on 400 acres of Bolsa Chica is unsustainable. The impacts from increased traffic, increased water demands and increased services required will all be passed on to the taxpayers of this county. The county staff report states that after all development fees have been garnered by the county, a tax burden of over $450,000 per year forever will be added to the county general fund.

Equally as alarming is the fact that scientists have identified 18 global hot spots that are threatened with extinction. One of these threatened ecosystems is the California coastal region. Surely, the Koll [Real Estate Group] could work with the land trust and together we could preserve this jewel in our midst. As we approach the millennium, it is time to redefine “community development.”
