COUNTYWIDE : 300 Area Residents Take Citizenship Oath

Share

More than 300 Ventura County residents became American citizens at a naturalization ceremony last week at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The U. S. District Court simultaneously administered the citizenship oath Thursday to more than 8,000 Southern Californians from 102 nations.

Most of the county residents taking part applied through citizenship workshops frequently conducted by El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, a Latino advocacy group in Oxnard.

Volunteers assist citizenship applicants with paperwork and orientation sessions at the workshops and teach English, civics and history classes free of charge to prepare applicants for Immigration and Naturalization Service tests.

The next workshop is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Santa Clara Church in Oxnard. To register, call 983-2336.

El Concilio’s Citizenship Project has assisted more than 2,000 county residents in becoming U. S. citizens this year alone.
